Upon graduation in 1943 with a B A in Geography, he enlisted in the Navy and was commissioned that year.
ENS Davis first reported to the USS CORREGIDOR
where he served in various billets until 1945. He then served as Gunnery Officer on board the USS PALAU. LT Davis underwent Lighter-than-Air Pilot training at NAS Lakehurst. Following his designation as Naval
Aviator in January 1947, he served 2 years with Airship Squadron ONE. The next several years found him attending the General Line School, having duty at NAS Lakehurst as Officer-in-Charge of the Non-Pilot School,
and serving on the Staff of Commander Fleet Airship Wing ONE. LCDR Davis completed Flight Training in 1955 at Pensacola. This was followed by tours with Patrol Squadron ONE, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the
Office of Chief of Naval Operations, as Assistant to the Head of the National Policy Section. He was promoted to Commander in June 1958.
CDR Davis holds the following Medals: American Theater; National
Defense Service Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Philippine Victory Medal; and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 stars.
CDR and Mrs. Davis, the former Adele Kunkel, of San Diego, California, have 2
children: Robert Joseph, III, and Carol L.
