"Project Dominic", carried out on Johnston Island, was an Air Force project
to test nuclear weapons. They requested Naval Aviation assistance in clearing the ocean around the planned detonation areas. VP-6 got the call and several crews (I think 5 Crews) received orders to Johnston Island for that purpose. My crew, Crew 12, was one of the crews assigned.
We departed NAS Barbers Point, Hawaii on June 30, 1962, in P2V-5FS Buno 128419 for the flight. My Log Book says it was a 3.5 hour flight. After arrival, some of us young guys thought PATRON
SIX should be represented in some way. We came up with a simple white flag on which we had painted "PATRON SIX" or "VP-6" and also a likeness of the Blue Shark mascot
"SUBCONSCIOUS" on it. Ron Lundgren, Frank Conery and I (David Masters) "Ran Up The Flag" like the famous Iwo Jima flag raising! I am not clear on this but I imagine we said
something like "THE NAVY IS HERE".
